A Model Sustainable Community

The UniverCity community is designed to be a compact, mixed-use, transit-oriented community developed within the guidelines of sustainable development.  Only six years old, there are now approximately 3,000 permanent residents with a projected population of 13,000 residents when the community is fully completed in 2020.

The UniverCity properties encompass 600 acres on the top of Burnaby Mountain--also the site of SFU, one of Canada’s finest universities.  Along with many opportunities for off campus housing, the area is also ideal for townhome and condo living and has attracted a diverse community of professionals and families in addition to students and the employees of SFU.

These beautiful development lands are surrounded by more than 1300 acres of protected forest and wildlife habitat. There are extensive hiking and biking trails, as well as countless indoor and outdoor recreational opportunities.

The area provides most professional services, many restaurants and cafes, retail and entertainment.  There is also a new elementary school, complete recreation centre, and a full service childcare facility (currently, the most sustainable building in all of Canada).  As the area expands, these services and community amenities will continue to grow, ensuring that UniverCity is a completely self-contained community.

True to its original purpose, public transport between SFU on and off Burnaby Mountain to anywhere in the Lower Mainland is frequent, convenient and easy to access. Plans for future gondola service on and off the mountain will increase transit options while greatly decreasing the community’s carbon footprint.

UniverCity is actually a separate entity from nearby Simon Fraser University, although students and local residents often interact at the community level.   The extensive recreational and academic programs and facilities of the university are available to community residents for a nominal monthly fee.

The SFU Community Trust (the Trust) has two goals:

1. Create a complete community on Burnaby Mountain, with a diverse selection of housing and a full range of shops, services and amenities.
Currently over 3,500 residents have made UniverCity their home; in time, 7,000 more will join them.

2. Build an endowment fund to support teaching and research at SFU.
To date, UniverCity had contributed over $29.6m to the SFU Endowment Fund for research and education.

The SFU Community Corporation

The SFU Community Corporation is governed by an independent Board of Directors that includes SFU stakeholders, faculty and student representatives, as well as external members with expertise in real estate development, finance, law, and other related disciplines.

As trustee, that Board sets policy for SFU Community Trust, helping to shape the future of UniverCity.
