SFU Real Estate News | SFU Childcare Society Canada's Greenest Building

An official groundbreaking ceremony was held Wednesday at UniverCity, a sustainable community adjacent to Simon Fraser University, for what proponents are calling “Canada’s greenest building.”

The building will be used as a childcare facility. It’s being developed by the SFU Community Trust in partnership with the SFU Childcare Society and the SFU Faculty of Early Childhood education. It it aims to be the first building in Canada to meet the Living Building Challenge—a new sustainable building standard launched by the Cascadia Region Green Building Council, that has become the most advanced green building rating system in the world.

The building will generate more energy annually than it uses, use less water than it recycles or harvests from rainwater, be free of toxic materials, supply the majority of its materials from within a 400-km radius—yet will cost less to construct than a conventional building. Work begins in August, with completion by summer 2011.
